When parents have never married, their disputes are resolved in what is called a Paternity case. This can be somewhat confusing because many couples have no dispute about who the father is. However, paternity must be formally established with the State of Arizona in order to proceed with a case involving child custody and child support. Paternity is never assumed by the state if you are a parent who has never been married.
